wedge Tech Topic - SACD - DVD Audio - Surround sound?

* Is the future sound of music going to be on DVD or just stay as it is.
digitallifetv.com—default.aspx
* Of the high resolution, surround sound formats, DVD-Audio is actually doing better than SACD. But that's not saying much, as both formats are doing poorly.

There are a large number of DVD-A capable players out there now, but:

• Most people don't seem to care about audio quality
• Combined sales of SACD and DVD-A are very small
• The content protection turns off users. They can't rip the music to their digital music players. That's a big turn-off these days.

What's been more successful is multichannel audio in standard Dolby Digital. That's not very appetizing for many audiophiles because of the high level of compression. Newer DD formats will be less compressed, so that may be the longer term approach. But content protection is still an issue.

wedge Composition Showcase

wedge Composer Review Number Twenty two - Dummy

* Play piece - "Vastness of Space"

* Play piece - "Desert Rats"

* Desert Rats was written as an experimentation into creating a middle-eastern or desert themed war piece. It mostly consists of the VSL though features several instruments from other smaller asian-sounding libraries.

Vastness of Space was intended as a sci-fi space-war piece. I tried to give it a militaristic feel but also experimented mixing synth instruments alongside orchestral to give a kind of 'retro' space-shooter-video-game feel. Vastness of Space is also primarily VSL, including the most-awesome Epic Horns (oh how I love them!). The opening section does feature SAM Horns, though.
