wedge Play Piece - Rasputin, and the ladies

* This was a small student short film. It is a documentary which, as you begin to watch it, you start to realise that the film is pulling your leg. Therefore, the brief was to compose serious "Russian"-sounding music for the majority of the cues "Pseudo-Religious" music for cues 3 and 6, and "Russian-Club" music for 7. I had a weekend to write and produce the music.
Therefore, I tried to adopt an overall Russian style for the pieces (using more russian-style plagal cadences and so forth), and instrumentation reminiscent of the turn of the century. I came up with a theme for Rasputin, which I tended to use either in motive form or in full all over the place and, in order to add some overt Russian flavour, I added a balalaika to most of the cues, although in some of them it is mixed very low, to give just a whiff. In 7 and 8 I decided to add a gypsy-style violin (a bit of a Czardas thing going on there) which sounded about right to me

* Technical review

I used VSL Orchestral Cube, and some of the new VIs (particularly for the Gypsy violin), along with Ethno World 3 for the Balalaika; some of the samples were on my Mac G5 DP2.7, and some on my PC (Carillon), running using Brainspawn Forte and Gigastudio 3. I wrote it in Logic 7, mixed there and pre-mastered in Pro Tools 6.9. I used Oxford Dynamics, PSP Vintage Warmer and Audioease Altiverb 5 (trying not to drown the thing).
